SAINT PIERRE
This French island lies between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, and it is a gem to visit for its color, uniqueness, real-thing croissants, remoteness, great food and fog.
Saint Pierre was named in 1536 and settled later by Basques, Bretons and Normans. Catching, salting and exporting cod was the work done here for centuries. For a short time during Prohibition, Saint Pierre was a significant rum-running port.
The 2010 population is 5,000.
These pictures were made in July 1982 with transparency films and fully manual (!) SLR cameras. The slides were cleaned and scanned in August 2009.
