New York City 9/22/01
Walking through midtown Manhattan 11 days after the World Trade towers fell was moving as an American and so interesting as a photographer.
Our flag and certain phrases appeared in unexpected places and in new ways as gestures of sadness and patriotism. From very formal to quite informal, displays of grief were all around.
At first it felt uncomfortable to be in New York so soon after the terrorists' attacks. Relief came with seeing that nearly everything was perfectly intact.
Though quieter, the spirit of New Yorkers seemed intact, even fortified by universal expressions of unity and loss.
